Michael Murphy is an architect, educator and writer, whose work focuses on how the built environment shapes our lives, our health, and our communities. Murphy’s recent book, “The Architecture of Health” (2021), traces the history of medical design and its attempt to align architecture with health outcomes. His new work looks at the ownership of the built environment and how sharing access can solve the climate and social crises we face.

Murphy is the current Thomas Ventulett Chair of Architecture at Georgia Institute of Technology, and serves on the board of MASS Design Group, which he founded and led until 2022. With the MASS Design Group, he was the lead designer of such projects as the Butaro District Hospital, the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, and the forthcoming Embrace/King Memorial in Boston. Murphy has a BA from the University of Chicago and an MArch from Harvard Graduate School of Design. He lives in Boston with his wife and two children. He is from Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
